How to Directly Reach Out to Politicians?

Understanding how to logistically contact representatives to help get legislation you want to be passed.

After realizing there is an issue in your community and doing research about it, how should you go about contacting your local politicians?

1) Research at what level you want to tackle the issue? Is it locally, state-wide, or federally?

2) After learning at what level you want to have an impact, understand who in your area represents each of these levels. For the local level, there might be people like selectmen or mayors. At the state level, there is state legislatures in each district within the state. At the federal level, there are senators and House representatives. All of this information for your specific area can be found easily online.

3) Contact their emails, phones, mailboxes, and even go in-person. Set up appointments with them and always be persistent.

4) Talk to their staff members and relay what you want seen and make sure they understand the work that you have been able to do and your knowledge on the issue. Bring other people and community members who support your cause so that the politicians know how urgent and important the cause might be.

5) Be persistent. Reach out to them on a weekly basis and make sure to follow up.

Following these steps will bring you closer to passing legislation that you want.
